Summary

The Crime Scene Investigations Course is designed to enhance the capabilities of law enforcement officers responsible for investigations at the scenes of major crimes. The focus of the course is on the recognition of the laboratory and evidentiary value of those items most commonly encountered at the scene of serious offences. Through lecture and practical exercises, course participants will learn the proper techniques of locating, recognizing, documenting, collecting, and preserving items of evidence.

Course Objectives:

• Plan and organize a crime scene investigation.

• Accurately record a crime scene through photography, sketches, and notes so that it may be

reconstructed later for interpretation and a profile of a possible suspect developed.

• Demonstrate proper techniques of recognizing, locating, documenting, marking, collecting,

packaging, and preserving physical evidence.

• Recognize the evidentiary value of those items most frequently encountered at crime scenes.

Know the class v. specific characteristic considerations of bodily fluids, firearms, tool marks,

fingerprints, questioned documents, shoeprints, tire treads, and trace evidence.

• Awareness of the special considerations and techniques of death investigations.
